Something that can take learning beyond the pen and paper and into the real world is traveling. When an individual goes to an unfamiliar place., they see other ways of life. THey experience the culture, embracing and maybe even adopting the ways of thinking as their own, more than they would by simply reading about it. Your worldview is widened, and when forming opinions on current events, particularly foreign affairs, you may have a stronger respect and even appreciation for their beliefs and perspective.
WHile I do not have much experience with international travel, I have found the culture and beliefs of the native american tribe of the pueblo people as foreign as any. I learned a lot about this tribe when I visited the taos pueblo in Taos, New Mexico a few summers ago. While I did learn about the american indian culture in school, I did not learn nearly as much AS i DID AT THE PUEBLO. iT WAS ALSO VERY GENERALIZED, UNDERSTANDABLY, AND NOT AS IN DEPTH AS THE INFORMATION i RECEIVED WHILE IN nEW mEXICO. iT ALSO DID NOT HOLD MY ATTENTION AS WELL, BECAUSE THE CLASSROOM ENVIRONMENT IS NOT AS EXCITING AS THE REAL LIFE EXPERIENCE OF BEING AT THE RESERVATION.
While classroom learning is what must be relied on for the vast majority of learning, and can be very useful and beneficial, so can real-life experiences. By traveling to unknown places, we find out about how other people view the world and think of life, and sometimes weave those beliefs into our own opinions. There is a lot to be learned everywhere, and I highly recommend traveling, because it will be a very enriching experience.
What places have you been that you learned from or took away a lot from? What other real-life experiences can be useful?
